Sounding off on Marylanders' Demand for Compassionate Medical Cannabis Legislation in 2009!

Welcome to the official blog for the 2009 Maryland Medical Cannabis Legislation Campaign!

Here we will be offering information regarding: campaign updates, upcoming events, patient stories, medical research, and much more!

So please join us in our mission to make Maryland the 14th state to provide a safe, legal channel for medical patients to access their medicine!

Sincerely,
Damien Nichols and the whole campaign team!

Hi Maryland Safe Access Now.

I was tooling around the net book-marking sites that have information on drugs policy and medical marijuana. And I find this virgin site. Oh joy to be the first post. One of the sites I visit regularly has an informal contest to see who will be the first to post a reply to the weekly post from visionary and critic James Howard Kunstler. Ha! Looks like I outfoxed everybody on this one.

I have been following the slow collapse of the world economy for a few years now, and it seems to me (and other more illustrious commentators) that we are entering the final phase of the death of capitalism. Bastions of free trade and privatization are falling over each other in their haste to nationalize the banks. China, not the United States, is now the leading innovator. In fact the US is more vulnerable than most of the industrialized countries, in part because of the huge amount of debt being carried by each US American family, and most particularly because of our unbalanced, discriminatory, and ridiculously expensive health care system. As the jobs disappear (Quarter of a million jobs gone in the last two months) so does the health insurance for millions and millions of people. Can you imagine what this place is going to be like when 50 million people can no longer afford their Prozac? And when you consider the huge markup that many of the coping drugs enjoy, this situation will be here sooner rather than later.

We are going to need the weed, big time. And the archaic, unconstitutional drug prohibition laws will have to swept away. So I reckon ASA, and other humane, prescient organizations promoting this necessary reform will inevitably grow and gain momentum. Which means that this board will become a lot more popular.

So what should we talk about?

There doesn’t seem to be much point in duplicating those conversations that occur elsewhere. Like Drug Policy Alliance Network, Common Sense for Drug Policy, Stop The Drug War, The International Coalition for Drug Awareness, Students for Sensible Drug Policy, The Wo/Men’s Alliance for Medical Marijuana, NORML, The Norml blog, DRC Net, Drug Science.org or even Americans for Safe Access. Aside from specific events relative to Maryland (which should be cross-posted in other locations), I think we should talk to each other about the things that make us happy.

Given the need to identify a few hundred people in Maryland who will blast off an email, phone call, or a letter, in response to a request for action, a more active group who will show up for lobbying, and/or street action. And a core group who will organize events, and send requests for participation and information to the wider community. My theory is that people will naturally be attracted to our group if you keep the focus on what makes you happy.

In pursuit of this aim I recently interviewed all of the attendees at a Maryland ASA meeting to find out what sort of things make people happy. Here are the survey results (with a few comments from your truly).

Being connected – open to a number of interpretations in this context. ;^)
Information is pretty dry and uninspiring without some sort of connection, and when you connect with people (while handing out flyers, for example) then much becomes possible.

Wholeness – That’s deep - A deep whole ;^).
Seriously though, that which is whole and complete is profoundly satisfying. Useful as a guiding principle for all kinds of activity.

Social Activism – Countering injustice, advancing enlightened ideas. This can energize and stimulate. And people who share this endeavor become closer to each other - succeed or fail.

Liberation –People have united around this idea since oppression was invented by Gilgamesh ten centuries ago. “Emancipate yourself from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our mind.” (Free the Weed).

Everything (Dental work?) Yes, even dental work can make you happy if you approach it with the right attitude. If all tasks, obstacles and reversals can be re-framed from this perspective, your friends will tire of your pollyannish ways and abandon you to a life of social isolation. But that can be good, too!

My Dog – Yeah, go the animals. If you ever get stuck in an unproductive situation, a completely unrelated perspective can hit the reset button on your life, or at least on the moment. Relief.

Everything (but not all the time). Even the good stuff can become stale and enervating. Great sweeping changes like, say, the election of a new President, are fun for a while, but eventually….(Eric Holder). Change your focus before you wear yourself out.

Be Happy.
